Public sector obliged to buy energy star-approved products
Microscope magazine has reported that public sector
organisations will be legally obliged to buy
printers and PCs that have passed the new, more
stringent Energy Star criteria governing energy
efficiency after the European parliament agreed to
adopt the new regulations. A the start of the year
the US and European environment protection agencies extended the deal to continue with Energy Star and
decided to raise the bar to qualification.
Some vendors (although not Kyocera) waited to see whether the market would adopt the new regulations and last week got their answer: European Parliament said it would require member states to apply the energy efficient criteria set out in Energy Star to the public procurement of office equipment.
Commentators pointed to the fact that this would save both energy and public money.
Editor's comment: Kyocera was the first document imaging company to state full compliance with Energy Star, well in advance of this directive. It seems very shortsighted of other organisations to adopt a wait and see attitude on an environmental standard that was previously so ubiquitous!
